Hearst's San Simeon Estate: La Cuesta Encantada

Casa Grande

Casa Grande is the centerpiece of Hearst's San Simeon estate, and focal point of guest activities on the hilltop.

Construction on the oldest part of the structure was begun in 1922, with the design reminiscent of a church Hearst saw while traveling in Spain.

Over a twenty five year period the house expanded from 14 rooms to 115. The last section to be added was the New Wing.

Casa del Mar

Casa del Mar's four-story, southern face overlooks an unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean, and miles and miles of breathtaking Central California coastline.

Decorated with cast concrete ornament and glazed tile inspired by the architecture of Spain and Italy, Casa del Mar was designed by William Randolph Hearst to be the finest of the three smaller houses.

The Hearst family used this cottage as a residence on the estate during the early stages of the construction of Casa Grande.
