La Cuesta Encantada William Randolph Hearst's California estate is the best known of his many architectural endeavors. Long before ground was broken on the legendary estate in 1919 Hearst dreamed of building a castle on the hilltop where he had camped as a youngster. Hearst chose a talented young architect, Julia Morgan, to translate his dream into a reality. Their collaboration on the San Simeon project began in 1919 and lasted for more than twenty-five years. |

The Hacienda Milpitas During the 1920s the ranch land belonging to San Simeon expanded considerably. This expansion included the Milpitas Rancho, one of the many San Antonio Valley properties acquired by Hearst. It was the center of Hearst ranch operations, and when the original ranch house burned in 1929, Hearst again looked to Julia Morgan. The Hacienda Milpitas, reminiscent of Spanish Mexico, is a fitting architectural detail to Hearst's San Simeon estate. |
